Content Inside: Recommended Installation for Centos Servers Recommended Installation for Centos Servers Overview: This document outlines the basic install of a Linux server for the Application Servers lab. The configuration of Linux servers can vary depending on one's needs. If you must share this drive with the Operating Systems 2 class use Option #1: Lab Compromise. If you are using the drive only for Linux in the Application Servers lab OR you are building a production server then use Option #2: Production. Option #1 is a compromise to allow the drive to be used for the Windows 2003 R2 Server installation you will need for the Operating Systems 2 class and should not be used in production servers. In both cases, the installation choices that follow are guidelines that should be adjusted to meet the individual requirements of each installation. In production servers I like to plan on a minimum five year life. During this time you will install new software, patches, and your users. The goal is to plan for expansion, hardware changes, and maintanence as the system ages. Option 1: Lab Compromise The lab hard drives are 80GB that must be shared with a Windows 2003 R2 Server installation. Install the Windows 2003 R2 Server first. 1.) Delete all partitions on the drive. Use the first 38G for the Windows partition(s) and leave the rest of the drive as unpartitioned free space. 2.) During the Windows install create a 20G C: drive then create an 18G D: drive. You will need to install applications and patches on C:. The 20G size allows enough space to install all software and provide room for expansion. The 18G D: drive is used for the user account's home directories. In production servers this would be the largest partition. 3.) Use the administrator password given in class. 4.) Create a user account for yourself. This should follow the same conventions as your accounts on the cset2.stcc.edu server. Page 1 of 4 © Edward Bigos 2008
