Content Inside: STANFORD UNIVERSITY STANFORD UNIVERSITY Global Climate & Energy Project Technical Assessment Report A Technical Assessment of High-Energy Batteries for Light-Duty Electric Vehicles GCEP Energy Assessment Analysis Fall 2006 Abstract Widely successful electric vehicles could allow low-carbon electricity to replace fossil hydrocarbons as the primary energy carrier of the transportation sector, but battery technology is a major limitation to electric vehicles supplying an energy service comparable to hydrocarbon- fueled vehicles. New battery technologies with higher specific energy, lower cost, and longer calendar and cycle lifetimes may be required to enable a successful electric vehicle. Current research efforts towards these goals include high-capacity and low-cost lithium intercalation cathode materials, anodes with higher lithium capacity, and alternative approaches involving redox couples, polyvalent cations, and oxide electrodes undergoing conversion or displacement reactions. Fundamental materials exploration is required to achieve a new generation of battery technology and a new, widely accepted generation of electric vehicles.
