Course Description This course provides a general historical survey of the Christian movement from its inception through the medieval period. A brief introduction to historical method and historiography is followed by the study of significant ideas, individuals, movements, and institutions in the rise and development of Christianity prior to the Protestant Reformation. Objectives 6 to learn about the people and events important to the formation and development of early Christianity 6 to understand and appreciate one's Christian heritage 6 to understand and appreciate the heritage of groups beyond the Baptist family 6 to interpret contemporary issues in Christian life in light of their historical roots 6 to develop the ability to think historically and critically, placing individuals, movements, and ideas within their proper context Required Texts There are two (2) required books for this class: a textbook and a documents book. The text describes and interprets the people, events, and concepts that have been important throughout the first half of Christianity's history.
