Rhode Island has one of the highest populations of artists per capita in the nation, and with the wide array of galleries in the state, even the most discerning connoisseur is bound to find something to suit his or her personal style and budget. At a loss for where to begin? Seasoned collectors Paula and Leonard Granoff have collaborated with RISD to share their collecting experience with the public in an exhibition of contemporary art at the Sol Koffler Gallery in downtown Providence. The Granoffs have long supported the arts in Rhode Island, and this exhibition continues a family tradition of philanthropy and love of the arts exemplified by Paula's father, Sol Koffler. In 1997 the Granoffs generously provided funds to renovate the galleries in The RISD Museum that house European and Renaissance Art, and their patronage has supported countless local artists over the years. "Paula and Lenny have been unflagging in their support of the arts at RISD," said Lora Urbanelli, Interim Director of The RISD Museum. "Not only do they understand the importance of their philanthropy of the arts at the highest level, they have a serious commitment to emerging artists, a keen eye, and a great sense of adventure!" Out in Front presents work by prominent local artists Ruth Dealy, Alfred DeCredico, Irene Lawrence and Ted Weller as well as contributions from artists who were students at RISD when the Granoffs first took notice of their work. Jamison Brosseau, Christopher Gryder, and Ben Snead are among the RISD alumni in the show whose work the Granoffs have collected. Other artists include Jill Davis, Joe McKendry, James Watkins, and Gregory Poulin. The exhibition will be on display from August 27 through September 12 at the Sol Koffler gallery, located at 169 Weybosset Street. The gallery is free and open to the public seven days a week, from noon to 8pm. For gallery information please call (401) 277-4809.
