Content Inside: Communication Intervention for Young Children with Autism: Overview of Content and Strategies Wednesday, August 6, 2008 9 am - 3:15 pm Southern Regional AHEC Gerald Strand Auditorium 1601 Owen Dr. Fayetteville, NC 28304 Breakfast and Lunch Provided Target Audience All interested health and human services professionals who work with children with autism and their families. Program Description This workshop will acquaint participants with the primary evidence-based communication inter- vention approaches used with young children (toddlers and preschoolers) with autism, and will enhance the ability of participants to select appropriate content and implement effective strategies for communication intervention with these children. The approaches covered include discrete trial training, applied verbal behavior programs, pivotal response training, milieu intervention/incidental teaching, relationship-based interventions, and the Picture Exchange Communication System. The empirical basis of each approach will be discussed as well as its strengths and limitations. Videotapes, demonstrations and short cases are incorporated into the workshop to facilitate un- derstanding of how each approach would be implemented. Objectives Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to: · Identifyappropriatecontentorgoalsforcommunicationinterventionforyoungchildren with autism; · Applystrategiesfromvariedevidence-basedcommunicationinterventionapproachesto practice; · Discusscurrentresearchevidenceforeffectivenessofdifferentcommunicationinterven- tion approaches used with young children with autism; and · Identifyresourcesforfurtherinformationoncommunicationinterventionwithchildrenwith autism.
