Content Inside: Costs and Cost Trends for Forestry Practices in the South Mark R. Dubois, Christopher B. Erwin, and Thomas J. Straka1 Cost estimates of practicing forestry in the South during 2000 and cost changes over the last 48 years are presented in this report. From 1952 to 2000 there have been 16 versions of the report, with the last ten being conducted on two-year intervals (see the bibliography). In this report we present results of a survey completed in 2000, describe current costs for nine common southern forestry practices, and provide tables with cost changes from 1952 to 2000. This report represents the only comprehensive survey of forestry practices costs in the South and is a standard reference for forestry financial analysis. Methods The tables are based solely on responses to a questionnaire like those used in past surveys. Individuals, private firms and public agencies from 12 southern states were asked to participate. Each respondent was requested to provide a detailed breakdown of their total costs by forestry practice. Thirty-seven usable returns were received. Twenty of the 37 responses were from forest industry, 12 responses from consultants and five from public agencies.
