Emphasis is on substitution and elimination reactions and chemistry of the carbonyl group. You will be taught the basic concepts on how simple molecules can be constructed. As far as possible, real life examples will be used to emphasize the important of organic chemistry." Major topics discussed include reactions mechanism, various organic transformations, stereochemistry and molecular orbital theory. CBC113 organic lab allows students to perform experiments to discover how theories discussed in lecture are derived from laboratory observations. Students must be registered for CBC 113 Laboratory course while taking the lecture. POSITION OF THE COURSE IN THE COLLEGE CURRICULUM CBC 113 is a 1- semester (50 hour) basic course in organic chemistry that is intended for students majoring in chemistry & Biological Chemistry. It is a prerequisite for all students majoring in chemistry. The class size of this course ranges from 100-150 students. In addition to lecture, small group tutorials will be mounted. OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE FOR THE STUDENT As a result of participating in this course, students should be able to: A. Understand the scientific method and how it is used in science to investigate our earth. B. Understand and able to apply simple organic reaction transformations. Functional group interconversion and C-C bond formation reactions. C. Understand the scope and limitations as well as the mechanisms of organic reactions. D. Understand the important of stereochemistry to our daily life. Able to view three dimensional structures with ease. E. Describe and explain currently held views of chemical bonding, and account for the chemical reactivity of reactions using molecular orbitals. F. Using various methods to probe the mechanism of a reaction. DEPARTMENTAL GOALS PROMOTED BY THE COURSE
